Osun State government and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) yesterday to combat corruption and foster a culture of integrity and accountability in the state.

The commission’s chairman, Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, who was at the state Government House for the signing of the partnership, said the signing of the MoU was an indication of the parties resolve to collaborate to combat corruption and foster a culture of integrity and accountability in the state.

He contended that corruption in any form must be eradicated for the nation to thrive, saying that the UN Convention against Corruption in Article 5(2) mandates that “Each state party shall endeavour to establish and promote effective practices aimed at the prevention of corruption” adding that similarly, the constitution of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) enshrines the principle that “The state shall abolish all corrupt practices and abuse of power.”

He noted that as the chairman of the ICPC and a former state Attorney General, he firmly believes that the fight against corruption cannot be won by any single individual or agency but through collective resolve to tackle the menace.

In his remarks, Governor Ademola Adeleke reiterated his commitment to selfless public service with zero tolerance for corruption.

He disclosed to the ICPC team that during his inauguration as governor, he openly warned those with corrupt mindset to opt out before it was too late, adding that he applied rigorous vetting in the financial approval process for all his projects.

“Our government is therefore elated to partner with the ICPC to further deepen good governance, especially regarding anti-corruption protocols.

The anti-corruption agencies have delicate assignments which demand the support and cooperation of those holding top government offices. Our government today demonstrates this political will by entering into a partnership with the ICPC on project monitoring and evaluation, ” Adeleke said.
