The Coalition of Rivers State Leaders of Thought (CRSLT) has backed moves by the President Bola Tinubu-led administration to review the 1999 Constitution.

Tinubu had, during a recent meeting with The Patriots, a group of eminent Nigerians, said the federal government would consider giving Nigerians a new constitution.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt yesterday, the coalition’s chairman, Chief Sunnie Chukwumele, stated that the country needed a new constitution that would address the agitations of most minority groups in the country.

Chukwumele said: “I think a review of the constitution is also needed in the country now. It is also needed because any organisation that does not have deliberate rules that make for goal achievement is inherently not functional.

“Most people who are interested in the sustenance and stability of this country as a corporate entity are bothered too much that our Constitution should be such that it should engender egalitarianism.

“We copy the presidential system of government without practising the presidential system of government. So, it is only a constitution that the people have given unto themselves, the people in the country. I am sure that we have over 200 ethnic groups in Nigeria; an ethnic group is a nationality of its own.

“So when they all come together and see those things that should bind them together and see those things where they should be individually, be represented; their interest protected and represented. These are the fears we have, and if we continue this way, those from minority areas will continue in their agitations.

“So, I support anything that will bring about a better constitution that represents the interest of every segment of Nigeria.”
