The Kano State House of Assembly has urged the Kano State government to construct an irrigation channel from Turawa to Kiru town to boost farming activities, especially during the dry season.
This was sequel to deliberations on the house floor during Monday’s plenary presided over by the speaker, Jibril Falgore.
In a motion moved by the member representing Kiru constituency, Alhaji Usman Tasi’u, he argued that the irrigation channel will go a long way in boosting the economy as most residents are farmers who can only farm during the rainy season.
He maintained that the community also faces the challenge of many youths migrating to other parts of the country to seek greener pastures, noting that, as a result of such movement, 10 people from the community died in a road crash on their way to Lagos from Kano.
While stressing its importance further, Tasi’u said it could engage many youths during the dry season farming, encourage self-reliance, and discourage migration.
In a similar development, the House also reiterated its call to the state government to provide relief materials to victims of flood disasters.
In a motion of urgent public importance, a member representing the Ajingi constituency, Alhaji Lawal Tini, pointed out that flooding has devastated communities in Ajingi, especially Toranke.
He stressed that half of the community was affected, leaving women and children to sleep in schools, markets, and uncompleted buildings, with some children moving from one place to another and begging for food.
