Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, has launched a worldwide anti-scam awareness campaign to protect users from fraudulent schemes during the holiday shopping season.

The announcement, made on Monday, underscored Meta’s efforts to counter the growing sophistication of online scams.

The company revealed that it removed over two million accounts connected to scam centers operating in Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, the UAE, and the Philippines this year. Additionally, enforcement measures led to the removal of 15,000 phishing URLs in Vietnam and 9,000 in Singapore.

According to Meta, scammers were increasingly leveraging advanced tactics, including AI-generated voiceovers and fake customer testimonials, to deceive unsuspecting holiday shoppers. These schemes often involved fake Christmas gift box promotions, counterfeit retail coupons, and fraudulent holiday decoration sales.

“Scammers constantly evolve their tactics to evade detection and rarely target one single platform,” Meta stated, noting that this fragmentation allows scams to operate across multiple platforms. “This ensures that any one company can only see a small piece of these scam campaigns,” the company added.

Meta has partnered with internet safety expert and ethical hacker Rachel Tobac to educate users on identifying and avoiding online threats. The company also expanded its Fraud Intelligence Reciprocal Exchange (FIRE) program, initially launched in the UK and Australia, to financial institutions worldwide.

The FIRE initiative facilitates real-time information sharing between Meta’s platforms and banks to detect and prevent scam activities.

With scammers using multi-language approaches and cutting-edge technology to exploit holiday consumers, the company emphasised collaboration with cybersecurity firms and global institutions to stay ahead of fraudulent schemes.
