Wife of Abia State governor, Pricillia Otti, has said the government is intensifying its campaign against gender-based violence in the state.
Mrs Otti made the remark in an address she delivered at a summit to mark the end of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence in Umuahia, the state capital.
The event themed, “Advancing Gender, Justice and Child Protection Through Strategic Partnership” was organised by her office in collaboration with the State Ministry of Women Affairs
“This will ensure the prevention of the act through timely intervention and monitoring of the environment as well as provide support and services for the survivors,” she said.
She challenged government agencies, security personnel, religious organisations, healthcare givers and traditional rulers to join the campaign “to eradicate the threat.
“As the first lady of the state, I am totally committed to this. With unwavering commitment, we will build a future where the right, safety and dignity of every individual are upheld.”
The state commissioner for Women Affairs, Moreen Ahukwa, underlined the need to end gender-based violence in the state, describing it “as very dehumanising.”
She lauded the government for establishing skills acquisition centres for women and introducing free basic education in the state saying they are both empowerment tools.
