In a bold step to strengthen security across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister Nyesom Wike has announced a series of initiatives designed to enhance the safety of residents and support the efforts of the nation’s security agencies in the nation’s capital.

During a media chat on Sunday, Wike revealed that the government was in the process of building 12 new police stations across six Area Councils in the FCT to better serve local communities.

“We are building 12 new police stations to improve response times and better serve the needs of the communities,” Wike confirmed.

The FCT Minister also outlined the introduction of high-tech tools, including drones to boost security.

“We have paid for drones, and this is the first time it is happening in the FCT,” Wike proudly stated.

Additionally, he announced the construction of a centralised security command control centre where all security agencies will report and coordinate their efforts. “This centre will ensure a more integrated and efficient security response across the Territory,” he added.

Wike also addressed the role of surveillance systems in maintaining public safety, acknowledging the limitations that come with the FCT’s unique status.

He stressed the need for collaboration with security agencies to optimise the effectiveness of cameras and other surveillance tools.

“In terms of camera surveillance, we need to work together with all the security agents. You are not allowed to provide a camera in the city where the president resides,” he explained.

“While individuals can set up their own cameras, the FCT does not function like a state, and we do not collect federal allocations to fund such initiatives.”

Wike also use the opportunity to emphasise the often-unseen efforts of security agencies in preventing crime.

“Every day, you should kneel down and pray for our security agencies. You only hear about how people are attacked, but you don’t hear about the countless times attacks were prevented,” he said.

The FCT Minister’s comments underscored the importance of supporting security efforts, recognising the tireless work of agencies to keep the FCT safe.
