The president of the Nigerian Political Science Association (NPSA), Prof Hassan Saliu, has hailed the House of Representatives’ proposal for the creation of new 31 states in the country.

Saliu, during an exclusive interview with LEADERSHIP in Ilorin, Kwara State, said that creation of more states in the country would encourage participation in the political process.

“On the issue of state creation, based on the theory of participation in the political process, it would be difficult to defeat the argument for additional state creation in Nigeria”, he said.

He, however, noted that agitations for the creation of more states were due to the poor performance of the state governors and their failure to ensure good governance in their states.

Saliu who teaches Political Science at the University of Ilorin, blamed the poor performance of the existing states on their administrators, poor digestion of the concept of democracy, saying that “the basis for the lackluster performance is the poor digestion of the concept of democracy”.
