The CEO of SYNLAB Nigeria Ltd, Kenneth Okolie, has said Nigeria is emerging as a key destination for medical tourism, even as he emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration within the country’s health sector, to fast-track the process.

Okolie, who made this call at SYNLAB’s 20th anniversary celebration in Lagos, stated that fostering partnerships and coordinated efforts among stakeholders would drive improved healthcare outcomes through shared expertise, innovation, and better access to medical services.

The CEO outlined the company’s vision for the next decade, focusing on an ambitious expansion drive, stressing that bridging existing healthcare gaps and enhancing service delivery are at the core of SYNLAB’s growth strategy. “Our mission is to provide world-class medical diagnostics, ensuring that healthcare delivery in Nigeria meets international standards,” Okolie stated. He added that new diagnostic centres would be launched nationwide, with more planned in the coming years, reflecting the company’s commitment to accessibility and quality.

Okolie pointed out that Nigeria has vast economic opportunities in medical tourism, similar to the successful models in the UAE and the Caribbean. He suggested that with the right policies, investments in healthcare infrastructure, and promotion of innovation, Nigeria could become a top destination for medical tourism.

“This transformation will require deliberate action, investment, and collaboration among all stakeholders. We have the resources, the expertise, and the drive to make this vision a reality,” Okolie said, urging partners, stakeholders, and regulators to support SYNLAB’s vision of redefining healthcare in Nigeria and Africa.

Co-founder of PathCare Nigeria (now SYNLAB Nigeria), Dr. Richard Ajayi, recounted the company’s journey towards attaining international standards, while highlighting the transformation PathCare brought to diagnostic services in Nigeria, overcoming inconsistent local lab testing and financial challenges to establish high-quality healthcare solutions.

Ajayi emphasized that entrepreneurial resilience was crucial in overcoming numerous setbacks, including financial constraints, staff turnover, and regulatory challenges. He attributed SYNLAB’s market dominance to its commitment to high-quality laboratory services, ethical business practices, and obtaining the ISO 15189 certification, which assures value for patients.

“We upheld ethical business practices, rejecting commission-based doctor referrals and prioritizing quality diagnostic services,” he explained, stressing that these principles contributed to SYNLAB’s reputation as a trusted healthcare provider in Nigeria.

The consul general of Germany in Nigeria, Mr. Weert Börner, commended SYNLAB for its role in transforming diagnostic services across Nigeria. He highlighted the significance of the ISO certification and acknowledged SYNLAB’s contributions to knowledge transfer within Nigeria’s healthcare sector over its two decades of existence.
