The residents of Zanna Zakariya Housing Estate in Damaturu, the state capital, lament the persistent water scarcity, making life unbearable during Ramadan.

An investigation by our Correspondent revealed that there is an indication that the acute water shortage is worsening the people’s living conditions as they are already grappling with other challenges.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the affected areas mainly depend on the state

“water board, boreholes established by the government, and water vendors to get water for their daily use.

Due to the scarcity, the water vendors are capitalizing on the desperate situation to sell their commodity at N100 and N150 per 25-litre jerry can, as against N50 or N80 before, which many residents describe as “prohibitive.”

However, speaking with residents of the estate about the water scarcity, Hajiya Fatima Bukar described it as “debilitating,” as it has worsened their living conditions and increased the pressure on their scarce resources.

Alhaji Muhammad, who lives in Zanna Zakariya’s quarters, told our Correspondent that he spends about N1,500 daily to buy water for his family’s domestic needs.

Speaking with about 24 married women represented by Dije Aliyu Gumsa, she also bemoaned the acute water scarcity, which she said is making life difficult for them as they traverse long distances looking for water for domestic use.

She added, ” I want to use this opportunity to inform you that, as I’m speaking to you now on Saturday, our children are no longer going to school in the morning and Islamiya in the evening due to the fetching water in the house.
