The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raised the alarm over the circulation of falsified Cikatem (Artemether 180mg/Lumefantrine 1080mg) suspension in the country.

NAFDAC, on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, said that the discovery was made at the Coordinated Wholesale Centre (CWC) in Kano State following a consumer complaint that led to an investigation.

The agency confirmed that the falsified drug bore the NAFDAC Registration Number (A11-100025), which belongs to Cikatem Tablets (20/120mg) and not the suspension formulation.

NAFDAC said it has since mopped up the fake products and intensified surveillance efforts to prevent further distribution.

It said that during an inspection of the manufacturing facility, 17,280 bottles of the suspected counterfeit drug were placed on hold pending destruction.

The product, manufactured by Michelle Laboratories at Plot 23, Block 2, Thinkers Corner Industrial Layout, Enugu, was indicated for treating malaria in children, including severe cases caused by all forms of Plasmodium.

The agency urged consumers and healthcare professionals to remain vigilant and report any suspected sale of substandard or falsified medicines to the nearest NAFDAC office.
