President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Most Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, has paid tribute to the late Pope Francis, emphasising his role as a leader in ecumenism and interfaith dialogue.

Ugorji stated, “The late Pontiff fostered greater understanding and cooperation among Christian denominations, promoting a culture of dialogue and mutual respect.”

He noted Francis’ tireless advocacy for the marginalised, stressing the significance of addressing poverty and social justice.

“Pope Francis implemented significant reforms within the Church, including important changes to liturgical texts and the establishment of new Vatican departments,” Ugorji said.

He acknowledged Francis’ encyclical “Laudato Si’,” noting it emphasised urgent environmental needs and inspired global discussions on climate action.

“Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis was revered for his humility and compassion. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire millions around the world,” he said.

He also said that the Pope’s funeral would follow the updated liturgical funeral rites, approved in April 2024, expressing the late pontiff’s desire for a more austere and faith-centered celebration.

Ugorji urged all Catholics and people of goodwill to pray for the repose of Pope Francis and the Catholic Church during this transition.

The Vatican announced the death of Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church, on Easter Monday, April 21, 2025, at approximately 7:35 AM at his residence in the Casa Santa Marta. This concluded a pontificate that began on March 13, 2013, following his election to succeed Pope Benedict XVI.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, as he was born, chose the name Francis in honour of Saint Francis of Assisi.
