Zamfara Anti-corruption Watchdog Tasks EFCC Over Alleged Selective Investigations

The Zamfara Anti-Corruption and Security Watchdog has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to launch an immediate and impartial investigation into allegations of massive corruption and abuse of office levelled against former Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, who held office from 2019 to 2023.

In a press statement released yesterday, the group’s chairman, Comrade Bello Garba Gusau, criticised the EFCC for what it described as a pattern of selective investigations that could erode public trust in the anti-graft agency.

“It is in the interest of justice, probity, accountability, and good governance for the EFCC to act on several petitions submitted since 2023 regarding misappropriation of over N250 billion in state funds during Matawalle’s administration,” the statement read.

The group referenced findings from the Zamfara State Transition Committee, led by former Inspector General of Police MD Abubakar, which reportedly uncovered large-scale financial irregularities under the former governor’s watch. These include fully funded but abandoned projects such as the Gusau International Cargo Airport, 14 Local Government Lodges, the Deputy Governor’s office, government house renovations, and various hospital and road constructions.

According to the group, several anti-corruption organizations have also submitted petitions to the EFCC, urging it to follow the money trail and ensure those found culpable are brought to justice.

“While we commend the EFCC’s efforts in pursuing other cases—including those involving former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Betty Edu and ex-NHIS Executive Secretary Professor Usman Yusuf—we find it troubling that similar urgency is lacking in the case against Matawalle,” the group stated.

It also highlighted recent high-profile probes involving other former governors, such as Yahaya Bello (Kogi), Willie Obiano (Anambra), and Theodore Orji (Abia), questioning why Matawalle has yet to face similar scrutiny despite repeated public and institutional outcries.

“EFCC’s continued silence or inaction on this matter risks undermining the anti-corruption campaign and may create the perception that certain individuals are shielded due to political connections,” Gusau warned.

The group emphasised that no one should be above the law and added that the EFCC’s credibility depends on its ability to act decisively without prejudice.

“If EFCC becomes selective in its investigation, arrest, and prosecution of public officers accused of corrupt practices, the fight against corruption will be defeated,” the statement concluded.

The Zamfara Anti-Corruption and Security Watchdog vowed to continue advocating for transparency, justice, and public accountability in the state and urged civil society and citizens to remain vigilant. “All eyes are on the EFCC,” Gusau declared.
