Green Energy International Limited (GEIL) has said it is strengthening pipeline protection in Nigeria’s oil sector with its new Otakikpo onshore crude oil terminal, marking a significant shift toward safer and more efficient crude transportation.

The company said the Otakikpo terminal, located near the Ogoni and Opobo fields in Rivers State, has a storage capacity of 750,000 barrels, expandable to 3 million barrels, and a pumping capacity of 360,000 barrels per day.

This infrastructure reduces reliance on vulnerable long-distance pipelines, which have been prone to vandalism and theft, a major issue causing Nigeria to lose about 400,000 barrels of crude daily.

According to the firm, GEIL’s strategy involves decentralising upstream infrastructure by using multiphase gathering systems with advanced multiphase pumps and meters, enabling safer crude collection and transfer. The terminal serves as a secure hub that unlocks over 3 billion barrels of oil equivalent reserves from stranded fields in the Niger Delta, including more than 40 nearby fields that lacked evacuation routes for decades.

The Otakikpo terminal supports third-party producers by providing access to cost-effective export infrastructure, facilitating economic inclusion and job creation in the region.

The company stated that by shifting away from traditional pipelines to this onshore terminal model, GEIL aims to reduce losses from theft and sabotage, enhance security, and modernise Nigeria’s oil logistics. Industry experts view this as a potential new standard for sustainable crude production in Nigeria, leveraging local innovation to resolve long-standing challenges in pipeline protection and oil evacuation.
Industry analysts believe this shift could set a new standard for sustainable crude production in Nigeria, reinforcing the country’s position in the global oil market.
