Addressing journalists after the executive council meeting yesterday, the commissioner for information, Hon Sambo Bello Danchadi, alongside other key officials, announced the approval for the acquisition of 500 federal government-built luxury housing units at the proposed Sokoto City.

The housing units will be purchased at the cost of ₦44.7 billion and are part of the state’s strategy to improve urban housing and accommodate the state’s growing population.
In a major boost to the agricultural sector, the council also approved the purchase of 250 tractors and agricultural implements worth ₦22.1 billion.

This acquisition will be funded jointly by the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs (60 percent) and the Ministry of Agriculture (40 percent).

The tractors will be sold to farmers at subsidised rates, a move described by the commissioner for agriculture, Tukur Alkali, as “a critical intervention to increase food production and mechanise farming at the grassroots.”

Further emphasising the state’s commitment to urban development and public safety, the council approved the construction of a pedestrian bridge for pupils of Yakubu Muazu Model Primary School on Birnin Kebbi Road.
