The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commemorated MKO Abiola’s June 12 sacrifice for Democracy.
The chairman of Lagos State Social Democratic Party (SDP) and chairman of Chairmen of SDP Nigeria, Hon. Femi Olaniyi, in a statement released to newsmen yesterday in Abuja, paid tribute to the late MKO Abiola, highlighting his contributions to the democratic struggle in Nigeria. He said that MKO Abiola, who was elected President of Nigeria in 1993 under the banner of the SDP, was dedicated to the country’s development.
Olaniyi commended Abiola for his selfless philanthropy and belief in empowering the youth and promoting political inclusiveness.

He said, “As a builder of institutions, people, and ideas, MKO Abiola left a lasting legacy for the SDP, laying the foundation for a new Nigeria. I called on all SDP leaders across the nation to emulate Abiola’s leadership style and work towards national progress and unity.”

Olaniyi congratulates all SDP members in the 36 states and the FCT and urges them to uphold the values of democracy, unity, and progress that MKO Abiola stood for.
In honour of the late MKO Abiola, he emphasised the importance of building a Nigeria for Nigerians.

“As Nigerians commemorate Democracy Day, the celebration of MKO Abiola’s legacy serves as a reminder of the resilience and passion of a leader who dedicated his life to the service of the nation. A call for unity and progress echoes the spirit of MKO Abiola, encouraging SDP members to work towards a brighter future for Nigeria,” he said.
