The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has restated its commitment to protecting elderly citizens from all forms of abuse, including neglect, physical, emotional, and financial exploitation.

The assurance was given by the mandate secretary of the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, in commemoration of the 2025 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD), celebrated globally on June 15 under the theme, “Beyond Age.”

Dr. Fasawe noted that WEAAD aims to spotlight the often-overlooked abuse of older persons and to promote their rights, dignity, and inclusion in society.

She highlighted that under the leadership of FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, the administration is implementing programmes to support the wellbeing of elderly residents, including the Renewed Hope Initiative Support for the Elderly. The initiative, championed by the Office of the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, recently held its maiden edition in Abuja, offering free medical screenings to senior citizens.

As part of activities to mark WEAAD 2025, Dr. Fasawe called on residents, community leaders, and healthcare professionals to value older persons for their wisdom and contributions to society. She encouraged vigilance for signs of abuse such as unexplained injuries, fear, withdrawal, or sudden financial changes and urged prompt reporting to the appropriate authorities.

She further announced plans by the secretariat to upgrade geriatric services, train frontline health workers to identify and respond to abuse, and partner with traditional and religious leaders to spread awareness and uphold the dignity of the elderly.

Dr. Fasawe also appealed to federal ministries, NGOs, CSOs, and development partners to collaborate with the FCTA in advancing policies that prevent abuse, improve mental wellbeing and social inclusion, and enhance access to care for the ageing population.

“This is a collective call to action to look ‘Beyond Age’ to respect and include older people in society, challenge stereotypes, and protect them from neglect and abuse,” she said.
