The affected markets which included Katarko, Kukareta, and Buni Yadi in Gujba local government area were closed as part of renewed efforts to consolidate gains in the ongoing counter-insurgency operations across the state.

In a statement by the Special Adviser on Security Matters to Yobe State, Brigadier General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), the decision was taken for operational reasons to enable proactive engagements and enhance the security situation in the affected communities.

He added that, “This temporary measure became necessary to achieve set targets that will significantly improve the overall security landscape in the state.”

Brig.-Gen. Abdulsalam urged the public to cooperate and support security agencies for the greater good of the state, while acknowledging the inconveniences the closure may course.

“Efforts are ongoing to fast-track the operation and minimise the impact of the market closures on the livelihoods of our citizens.

“We plead for your understanding in the collective interest of peace and security,” he added.

He reassured residents that the markets will be reopened in the coming days once operational targets have been achieved.

LEADERSHIP reports that the closed three weekly are among the biggest markets in that axis of Yobe State.

One of the resident in Kukareta Village told our correspondent that residents did not know reasons for the closure, but all they heard was that there was an order from above.

An anonymous businessman from Buni Yadi said that the military closed the markets on the allegation that the traders sell foodstuffs to suspected Boko Haram terrorists.

He added that, “I don’t know much about that, but my thinking is that, they ordered the closure on Monday, saying those selling food in those markets are helping Boko Haram with food items”.
