Wife of Abia State governor, Priscilla Otti, has advocated for the establishment of creches in both public and private workplaces in the state for the well-being of nursing mothers and their newborns.

Mrs Otti stated this at the launch of a retrofitted day-care centre at the State High Court Complex, Umuahia, the state capital, noting that such centres will also encourage exclusive breastfeeding of babies.

She announced that through the Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with the  Ministry of Lands and Housing, the government is working to establish a creche at the state secretariat.

The first lady, who noted that the occasion was more than unveiling of a building, commanded the Ministry of Justice for embarking on “the meaningful project”.

While the structural rehabilitation was a team effort, I provide the furnishings and equipment and ensuring that the space is not just functional but welcoming, safe and nurturing for our children.”

“This is a bold testament that we’re building sustainable support system that puts families first. It is a tribute to every mother balancing work and motherhood and a gift to the future of our children.”

“I would also extend my sincere appreciation the State Oil Producing Areas  Development Commission, whose financial support made the renovation possible.”

‎In a contribution, the commissioner for Health, Enoch Uche underscored the need for proper and adequate care for nursing mothers and their newborns along with exclusive breast feeding.

‎Represented by the executive secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Kalu Ulu-Kalu, he described the centre as monumental and urged the workers to maximize its use.

‎In an address of welcome earlier, the state chief judge, Lilian Abai commended the wife of the governor for her determination in carrying for children, mothers and the less privileged in society.

‎Represented by Justice Chizaram Anyim, the chief judge noted that the passion of the present administration in the state in tackling the dire needs of the people has been outstanding.
