The National Sports Commission (NSC) has joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating sprint star Ajayi Kayinsola on his 21st birthday on Monday, while competing at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo where he has made history.
Kayinsola became the first Nigerian man in 18 years to qualify for the men’s 100m final at the World Championships, following in the footsteps of Olusoji Fasuba in 2007.
The athlete recorded a blistering 9.93 seconds in the semi-final, securing his place in the final, where he finished sixth with a time of 10.00 seconds on his championship debut.
NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade described Kayinsola’s achievement as a proud moment for the nation.
“Kayinsola’s story is one of courage, determination, and immense talent. To celebrate his 21st birthday while making history at the World Championships is extraordinary. He has given Nigerians a reason to believe once again in our sprinting heritage, and we are confident this is only the beginning of greater accomplishments,” Olopade said.
He noted that although narrowly missing out on a medal, Kayinsola’s achievement has placed Nigeria back in the global sprinting spotlight, demonstrating the promise of a new generation of athletes eager to carry the nation’s flag with pride.
The Commission extends warmest birthday wishes to Ajayi Kayinsola and looks forward to supporting the journey of Nigerian athletes as they continue to make Nigeria proud on the world stage.
