Philanthropist, Hon Gloria Omono Okojie, niece of one of Nigeria’s foremost anti-colonial and pro-democracy activists, late Chief Anthony Enahoro, has urged President Bola Tinubu to prioritise Constitutional reform and true federalism in Nigeria.
During a press conference in Abuja, yesterday, Princess Gloria praised the President’s past activism against military rule but expressed concern over the country’s continued use of the 1999 constitution, imposed by the military.
Princess Gloria advocates for repealing the 1999 constitution and adopting the 1963 constitution, which she believes can be amended to reflect modern realities. She argues this is crucial for restoring the social contract between the government and citizens.
“Nigeria cannot continue to use a constitution handed down by a military regime,” Princess Gloria stated. “The 1999 constitution must be repealed and replaced with one that truly reflects the people’s will.”
True Federalism and Regional Governance, Princess Gloria emphasises the need for true federalism, proposing that ethnic nationalities live in their regions with their own ID cards and police forces to promote accountability and development.
She stressed that no better honour can be bestowed on Chief Enahoro like reverting back to the 1963 Constitution, she added.”
She however requests that President Tinubu hold a joint sitting of the Senate and House of Representatives every October 1st to commemorate her late uncle, Chief Anthony Enahoro, a key figure in Nigeria’s independence. She believes this would be a fitting tribute to his legacy.
“This honour is overdue,” Princess Gloria said. “We must recognize and celebrate our heroes who fought for democracy.”
The call for constitutional reform continues to dominate national conversation, with Nigerians awaiting President Tinubu’s response.
