Former Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has announced his retirement from international football, drawing the curtain on a remarkable 15-year career with Nigeria’s national team.

Musa made the announcement on Wednesday in a post shared on his official X handle, where he reflected on his journey, achievements, and enduring bond with the country.

“After a lot of thought, I have decided to retire from international football, bringing to an end almost 15 years with the Super Eagles,” he wrote. “From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me.”

He recalled his early days in the national team setup, noting that he was once invited simultaneously to the U-20, U-23, and senior national teams. Despite the demands of constant travel and learning on the job, Musa said he never hesitated to answer Nigeria’s call.

“Whenever Nigeria called, I showed up. It was never something I had to think twice about,” he said.

Musa retired as the most capped player in the history of Nigerian football, having made 111 appearances for the Super Eagles. He described the milestone as a “great honour,” adding that he always understood the responsibility that came with representing the country.

Among the highlights of his international career, Musa pointed to Nigeria’s triumph at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, as well as his goals at the FIFA World Cup. He scored twice against Argentina in 2014 and added goals against Iceland and Argentina in 2018, finishing his career as Nigeria’s highest-ever goalscorer at the World Cup with four goals.

“To score four goals at the World Cup and be Nigeria’s highest goalscorer on that stage is something I am truly grateful for,” he said.

Musa also reflected on his time as captain of the Super Eagles, describing the role as one that taught him responsibility, patience, and selflessness.

“Wearing the armband was never about being in charge, but about helping the team, supporting younger players, and standing up for the badge,” he wrote, stressing that his commitment to Nigeria never wavered despite criticism at different stages of his career.

He expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaches, backroom staff, and administrators, as well as fans at home and abroad, whose support he said meant more than words could express.

“As I step away from international football, I do so with peace and gratitude,” Musa added. “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
