Why I’m In Benue Governorship Race – Sebastine Hon

A governorship hopeful in Benue state for 2027, Professor Sebastine Hon (SAN) has declared that worsening insecurity and unemployment are the primary reasons behind his intention to govern the state.

Hon made this known yesterday in Makurdi while receiving members of a women’s group, Akume Chubby Laddies, who paid him a solidarity visit, signalling early grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 election.

The learned silk, said persistent attacks by armed groups, especially in rural communities, had created a humanitarian and economic crisis that required decisive leadership.

“We are surrounded by armed groups who are eliminating our people. This situation is unacceptable. The state must rise against insecurity through effective governance and coordinated security response,” Hon said.

He also linked insecurity to economic stagnation, noting that illegal mining activities, particularly in Kwande local government area, had thrived due to weak regulation and absence of security.

“If you provide security and good governance, investment will follow naturally. I will create partnerships that benefit investors and the Benue State Government, while ensuring massive employment opportunities for our youths,” he stated.

Hon stressed that his ambition was not driven by personal interest but by the need to restore safety, unity and economic stability in the state, adding that his leadership philosophy is anchored on inclusiveness and merit.

“I represent unity. I do not look at where people come from; I deal with people based on humanity. I have consistently supported education through scholarships, both locally and abroad, up to postgraduate level,” he said.

On zoning, the governorship hopeful argued that the principle should not be used to shut out credible aspirants, pointing out that Zone A had governed Benue state for 18 years, while Zone B held power for 16 years, with Zone C yet to produce a governor.

He further contended that the current administration had weakened the zoning argument through its pattern of political appointments.

Earlier, leader of the group, Monica Beegu, said the women were encouraged by Hon’s entry into the race and pledged to work with him throughout the consultation and campaign period.

Hon, however, emphasised that he was still at the consultation stage and not yet campaigning, while accepting the group’s support.
