Suspected armed bandits, on Tuesday, attacked Doma town in Tafoki district of Faskari Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least 19 residents, according to local sources.
Residents said the gunmen, who were heavily armed, invaded the community around midday and operated for about two hours, leaving fear and destruction in their wake before fleeing the area.
A resident, who confirmed the incident to LEADERSHIP, said the attackers moved freely within the town between approximately 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., harassing and assaulting residents.
“They were in town from around noon until after the Azahar prayer. They terrorised the community. We have gathered 19 bodies so far for Janaza (funeral prayers). The victims include both men and women,” the source said.
The witness added that the attackers allegedly targeted several individuals during the raid, claiming that anyone beaten severely was killed.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities had not released an official statement on the attacking Katsina South senatorial district.
Faskari Local Government Area has in recent years experienced repeated banditry attacks, with communities often left vulnerable to raids, kidnappings, and killings.
This renewed attack happened after months of enjoying relative peace due to the negotiation reached with the bandits, raising fresh tension and uncertainty in the area.
