Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, has approved an automatic employment for the wife of the late cameraman of Channels Television, Kani Ben, as part of measures to support the bereaved family.
Kani Ben, whose full name is Pwakaniso Ben Sylvanus, was laid to rest on Saturday in his hometown, Kangling, Girei local government area of Adamawa State.
He died at the age of 43, nine days after he was involved in a ghastly accident while covering North East Development Commission (NEDC) projects with other journalists.
Speaking at the burial ceremony, Governor Mohammed expressed deep sympathy and extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the entire journalism community over the tragic incident.
The governor announced the automatic employment of the late journalist’s wife into the Bauchi State Civil Service as a gesture of support to the family.
He was represented by the Commissioner for Information, Usman Shehu Usman. The governor had personally visited other injured journalists at ATBUTH and directed his physician to remain with them to ensure proper medical attention.
The commissioner, accompanied by the special adviser on Media and Publicity, Comrade Mukhtar Gidado, paid tribute to the late cameraman, describing him as a dedicated professional, humble and a man of dignity who earned respect through hard work and commitment to his craft.
In his remarks, Comrade Gidado said the late Ben was not only committed to his profession but understood the importance of documenting history under all circumstances.
The NEDC also expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Mr Kani.
In a condolence message delivered during the burial, the NEDC managing director and chief executive officer, Mohammed Alkali, described Kani’s death in active service as a painful loss and a testament to his dedication to duty and the vital role of the media in society.
The managing director was represented by Naomi Abwaku from the Corporate Services Unit.
