Pedro’s Hat-trick Secures 4-1 Win For Chelsea At Top-Five Rivals Aston Villa

João Pedro netted a superb hat-trick as Chelsea significantly boosted their Champions League qualification aspirations with a commanding 4-1 victory away at Aston Villa.

Pedro’s inaugural Premier League treble saw Liam Rosenior’s side ascend into the top five, now just three points adrift of a faltering Villa in fourth place. Cole Palmer also found the back of the net on a memorable evening for the visitors, who displayed impressive resolve to come from behind after Douglas Luiz’s early opener.

This performance was undoubtedly the finest of Rosenior’s two-month tenure, and Chelsea will approach the remainder of the season with renewed confidence.

When Luiz struck within three minutes, Villa harboured high hopes of taking a significant stride towards securing their own Champions League ambitions, but their evening quickly unravelled. They have now managed just one win in their last six outings and are in genuine peril of slipping out of contention for a spot in next season’s most prestigious club competition. Unai Emery’s men are increasingly looking like they may need to triumph in the Europa League to secure their route into it.

Chelsea manager Rosenior opted to drop goalkeeper Robert Sánchez following a difficult display against Arsenal on Sunday, replacing him with Filip Jorgensen. However, the Dane was picking the ball out of his net after a mere 150 seconds as Villa made a blistering start. Leon Bailey impressed down the right flank, and his cutback was cleverly dummied by Ollie Watkins, allowing Luiz to deftly flick home his first goal of his second spell at Villa Park.

Chelsea responded admirably, and Villa required Emiliano Martinez’s flying save to deny Pedro’s header before Palmer then forced the Argentinian into another stop with a long-range effort. Nevertheless, Villa ought to have doubled their lead in the 23rd minute. Martinez’s long kick saw Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana stumble, appealing for a free-kick, allowing Watkins to race in on goal. However, under pressure from Trevoh Chalobah, he produced a weak shot straight at Jorgensen. Watkins had another promising opportunity shortly after Emiliano Buendía played him through, but Jorgensen parried the shot away with his arm.
