Guardiola Handed Two-Match Touchline Ban

Pep Guardiola will be forced to watch from the stands for two crucial upcoming fixtures after the Football Association confirmed a touchline ban for the Manchester City manager.

The suspension stems from an accumulation of disciplinary points, triggered by his yellow card during Saturday’s FA Cup victory over Newcastle United.

The incident that pushed Guardiola over the edge occurred in the first half at St. James’ Park. The City boss erupted on the sideline following a clash between Kieran Trippier and Jeremy Doku. After the Newcastle defender was penalised for a foul on the City winger, Guardiola confronted fourth official Lewis Smith, gesticulating wildly in disagreement with the official’s decision.

The booking—his sixth of the domestic season—triggers an automatic two-match suspension for technical area misconduct. However, sources close to the manager suggest the frustration had been building throughout the match.

Television cameras also captured Guardiola sarcastically applauding the officials after Omar Marmoush scored City’s third goal just before half-time, a gesture likely noted in the referee’s report.

As a result of the ban, Guardiola will be absent from the touchline for City’s Premier League trip to West Ham United next Saturday. He will also be barred from the dugout for the FA Cup quarter-final tie in April. While he is permitted to be in the dressing room before kick-off and at half-time, he will not be allowed to issue instructions from the technical area during play.

The timing of the ban presents a tactical headache for City, though there is relief within the camp regarding the scheduling of other competitions.

FA regulations regarding touchline bans do not extend to UEFA competitions or domestic cup finals. Consequently, Guardiola will be free to prowl the sideline for the pivotal Champions League clash against Real Madrid, as well as the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal on March 22.
