The MTN CHAMPS Athletics Classics in Calabar concluded a three-day athletics event yesterday, delivering several memorable moments, including the qualification of Nigeria’s women’s 4x400m relay team for the World Relays Championships in Botswana.
Led by seasoned athlete Patience Okon-George, the team recorded a time of 3:31.14, elevating them to 21st in the World Rankings and displacing Mexico. “This is a great achievement for the team,” Okon-George commented.
The quartet, comprising Anita Enaruna, Treasure Okereke, and Jecinter Lawrence, secured their place at the World Relays, which will be hosted on African soil for the very first time.
Team Ethiopia finished second with a time of 3:38.31, while Nigeria B secured third place in 3:40.50. This marks the second occasion a Nigerian team has qualified for the World Relays at an MTN CHAMPS competition.
The men’s 4x400m team narrowly missed out on qualification, clocking 3:04.59. Nigeria B finished second in 3:11.78, with Team Ethiopia placing third in 3:21.44.
Toheebat Jimoh of Team MTN triumphed in the women’s 200m with a personal best of 24.51. “I’m thrilled to have won gold,” Jimoh stated. Olaoluwa Obashola claimed the men’s 200m title in 21.74s.
In the Junior Women’s 200m, Miracle Ezechukwu and Rosemary Nwankwo earned gold and silver medals, respectively. Liberty Okon from Team Akwa Ibom won the Junior Men’s 200m title in 21.90.
Samuel Kure dominated the men’s Javelin throw with a best mark of 77.50m, whilst Clergy Edet secured the women’s High Jump title with a new personal best of 1.75m.
