Nigeria has officially confirmed its intention to host the 2031 African Games, with a delegation from the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) set to undertake a crucial inspection visit to the nation’s capital, Abuja, between 30th and 31st March 2026.

This high-level visit marks a significant step in Nigeria’s endeavour to secure the hosting rights for Africa’s most prestigious multi-sport spectacle.

A statement released on Friday by Kola Daniel, Special Assistant on Media to the Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), outlined Nigeria’s strategic vision behind the bid. The NSC highlighted the country’s aspiration to reinforce its position as a pre-eminent sporting nation on the continent, citing its extensive experience in staging major international competitions and ongoing significant investment in sports infrastructure and development. These factors, the Commission believes, make Nigeria a formidable candidate.

During their visit, the AUSC delegation, comprising senior officials and technical experts, will meticulously evaluate Nigeria’s key sporting facilities, ancillary infrastructure, and overall readiness to host the Games. The inspection will also serve as an opportune moment for Nigeria to showcase its organisational prowess, technical acumen, and unwavering commitment to delivering a truly world-class sporting event.

Beyond the immediate sporting implications, hosting the 2031 African Games is anticipated to catalyse substantial infrastructure development, generate considerable economic opportunities, and significantly boost youth engagement in sports nationwide. Ultimately, a successful bid would further solidify Nigeria’s standing and influence within the broader African sporting community.
