Bauchi State Governor, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, has distributed 14 GMC vehicles, 14 brand-new utility vehicles, 14 buses, and 114 Toyota Camry cars to newly appointed Emirs and District Heads across the state.
Speaking during the distribution ceremony, held at the Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu Square, Government House, Bauchi on Monday, Governor Bala said the distribution underscored his administration’s commitment to strengthening traditional institutions and enhancing their operational efficiency.
Governor Mohammed said the gesture reflects the respect, and trust his administration places in traditional rulers, reaffirming their indispensable role in the governance architecture of the state.
LEADERSHIP recalled that the state government recently created 13 new emirates and one chiefdom as well as over 100 district Heads across the state.
The governor said, “Royal fathers occupy a special and respected place in our society. They serve as a vital link between government and the grassroots. It is therefore appropriate and necessary that we continue to accord them honour, recognition, and institutional support.”
He emphasised that one of the enduring strengths of the traditional institution is its closeness to the people, noting that traditional rulers live among their communities and understand their daily realities, challenges, and aspirations.
“Your Royal Highnesses, one of the greatest strengths of the traditional institution is your closeness to the people. You live among them, understand their realities, and share in their challenges and aspirations. This connection must be preserved,” he added.
Governor Mohammed stressed the need for Emirs and District Heads to remain present in their domains, warning that effective leadership cannot be exercised from a distance.
He explained that leadership is built on proximity, engagement, and constant interaction with the people, adding that the provision of vehicles is meant to enhance their mobility and effectiveness.
“The vehicles provided today are meant to support this responsibility, enabling you to move across your domains, understand the needs of your people, and respond effectively,” he said.
The governor also cautioned against unnecessary travel, advising that all official movements must be approved, while reaffirming the government’s investment in improved welfare, salaries, better living conditions, and the construction of befitting palaces for traditional rulers.
He further noted that traditional rulers play critical roles in community engagement, security collaboration, conflict resolution, early warning systems, and the promotion of moral values.
“Our traditional rulers are expected to actively engage their communities, monitor development, and collaborate with government and security agencies. These responsibilities require reliable transportation and strong institutional support,” he said.
Governor Mohammed added that his administration will continue to provide interventions to strengthen traditional institutions, ensuring they are financially stable, responsible, and progressively independent.
He, however, warned that all funds allocated to traditional institutions must be managed with transparency and accountability, stressing that mismanagement would not be tolerated.
He also urged traditional rulers to strengthen internal coordination by involving district heads, village heads, and council members in decision-making processes, emphasizing that unity and collaboration remain essential for progress.
Earlier, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Hon. Aminu Hammayo, said the initiative reflects the government’s recognition of the vital role traditional rulers play in maintaining peace, unity, and grassroots development.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the Emir of Bauchi, Alhaji Rilwanu Sulaiman Adamu, expressed appreciation to the governor, describing the gesture as a strong demonstration of commitment to strengthening traditional institutions.
He assured the governor of their continued cooperation and commitment to ensuring that the support translates into meaningful and lasting benefits for the people.
“We are particularly encouraged by this support, which will greatly improve mobility and operational efficiency, enabling us to better fulfill our responsibilities,” the Emir said.
