A group under the aegis of the Nasarawa State Transparency, Accountability and Good Governance Group (NS-TA&G2) has called for the strengthening of the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections through the adoption of direct primaries.

The group said that since stakeholders had earlier resolved to adopt the direct mode of primaries, especially for the governorship election, it was important for the party to honour that resolution.

In a statement issued by its leader, Laz’rus Salaki, NS-TA&G2 averred that transparent primaries would provide a level playing field for all aspirants and reduce the risk of implosion within the party.

The group expressed concern over rising political tension following the alleged endorsement of a preferred aspirant by Governor Abdullahi Sule, stressing that such action is inimical to peace and stability within the party.

It said the move runs contrary to democratic norms and principles, calling on the governor to take an introspective view of the situation and engage all aspirants and stakeholders for an amicable resolution.

The statement added that the situation is more worrisome, “especially as the state chairman of the party, Dr. Aliyu Bello, is a close ally of the ‘preferred aspirant,’ and his actions may be interpreted as taking sides.”

“Based on the foregoing, we call on the chairman, as a matter of urgency, to step aside to allow for justice, fairness, equity, and transparency in the selection process.

“His continued stay in office will erode public trust, lead to acrimony among party faithful, and ultimately discourage other qualified aspirants from participating in the elections.
