Arsenal Lead Chase For £35m-rated Super Eagles Star Fernandez

Arsenal have emerged as the frontrunners in a high-stakes pursuit of Rangers’ commanding centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez. The 24-year-old Super Eagles defender is the subject of intense interest from across the Premier League and Europe, with a summer move potentially worth up to £35 million on the cards.

Fernandez’s rise in Glasgow has been nothing short of meteoric. After a quiet start following his move from Peterborough United — where he initially struggled for game time — the 6ft 5in defender has been transformed into a defensive stalwart under manager Danny Röhl. His performances this season earned him a spot in the PFA Team of the Season, marking him out as one of the most reliable operators in the division.

The defender’s statistics make for impressive reading. Beyond his defensive solidity — winning 72 per cent of his aerial battles and 69 per cent of defensive duels — Fernandez has proven to be a threat in the opposition box, netting six goals this term. His composure on the ball is equally noteworthy, boasting an 87.6 per cent passing accuracy.

Mikel Arteta is understood to be keen on adding further depth to his defensive ranks, though any move to the Emirates would see Fernandez face stiff competition from the established pairing of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.

Arsenal are not alone in their admiration. Chelsea have expressed significant interest, while West Ham United and Everton are also monitoring the situation. Beyond the Premier League, Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly long-term admirers, with Ajax, Feyenoord, and Club Brugge also keeping tabs.

Rangers are expected to play hardball over the transfer fee, holding out for a figure between £25 million and £35 million for a player with three years remaining on his current contract. For Fernandez, the final decision is likely to rest on the guarantee of first-team football as he looks to cement his status as one of Europe’s elite defenders.
