The President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), Dr. Theophilus Alaye, has reminded contestants for various positions that the council is meant to serve the Ijaw nation and not be a money-making venture.

Alaye stated this during the 2026 pre-elective convention held in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

He revealed that the delegates cut across the Central Zone, Eastern Zone, Western Zone, Abuja Chapter, and the Lagos Chapter.

Alaye emphasised that, as president, his tenure will come to an end on July 19, 2026, adding that it was imperative to kick-start the transition process by setting up the National Electoral Committee (NECOM) to usher in the 10th National Executive Committee (NEC) of the council.

The IYC president expressed confidence that, with the inauguration of the NECOM members, the electoral process would proceed smoothly.

He advised NECOM members to be transparent in the electoral processes and guidelines in order to ensure a free, fair, credible, and transparent election.

“The aspirants vying for various offices are Ijaw youths who are offering themselves to serve the Ijaw nation, not to make money.

“Aspirants should not be made to spend excessively as if they are contesting in a governorship election, so that, in the end, those who emerge will serve with dignity and open-mindedness in the common interest of the Ijaw nation,” Alaye noted.

The president reiterated his call for the decentralisation of the oil pipeline surveillance contract in the interest of peace, justice, equity, stability, and progress in the Niger Delta region.
