Former Nigerian internationals Samson Siasia and Daniel Amokachi are among the leading candidates vying for the vacant U-23 Eagles coaching position, as the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) begins the process of appointing a new head coach.
The role became available following the departure of Salisu Yusuf, who previously served in an interim capacity after working as an assistant coach within the national team set-up. With the next Olympic cycle already on the horizon, the NFF is keen to secure a capable and experienced hand to lead the country’s Under-23 side.
Siasia, 58, is widely regarded as one of the most accomplished youth team coaches Nigeria has produced. He has enjoyed two previous spells in charge of the U-23 Eagles and boasts an impressive Olympic pedigree. Under his leadership, Nigeria secured a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics football tournament, narrowly missing out on gold. He later returned to guide the team to a bronze medal finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics football tournament in Brazil, reinforcing his reputation as a specialist in youth international competitions.
Amokachi, 53, is also no stranger to the role, having previously handled the U-23 side during his coaching career. A member of Nigeria’s celebrated “Golden Generation”, he brings a wealth of playing experience at the highest level, as well as coaching stints in both club and national team environments.
The competition for the position is expected to be intense, with several other candidates believed to have submitted applications. However, the presence of Siasia and Amokachi has added significant weight to the selection process, given their track records and deep understanding of Nigerian football.
The NFF is expected to announce its decision in the coming weeks, with the successful candidate tasked with rebuilding the U-23 Eagles into a competitive force capable of securing qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and restoring Nigeria’s pedigree at the quadrennial Games.
