Polytechnic Students Push For AI-Learning Tools, Smart Classrooms

The National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has called for the urgent introduction of artificial intelligence-powered learning systems and smart classrooms in polytechnics across Nigeria, warning that the country risks falling behind in global technological advancement if technical education remains outdated.

Speaking during a press conference in Abuja, NAPS President, Eshiofune Paul Oghayan, urged the federal government and education stakeholders to adopt the EDON Digital Classroom Initiative as part of intervention programmes for tertiary institutions.

He said the initiative had become necessary as the world rapidly embraces artificial intelligence, automation, robotics and Industry 4.0 technologies.

According to him, many Nigerian polytechnics still operate with obsolete classroom systems, traditional chalkboards and poorly equipped laboratories, limiting innovation and practical learning.

“Our education system must evolve to meet global standards. Polytechnic education is built around technology, engineering, vocational training and industrial development, but many institutions still lack modern digital infrastructure,” he said.

Oghayan explained that the EDON initiative includes interactive digital boards, 3D animation simulation software and AI-powered teaching tools capable of transforming classroom learning and technical simulations.

He noted that smart classroom systems would expose students to globally accepted technologies, improve digital literacy and enable virtual practical training.

The student body called on the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Board for Technical Education, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund and other stakeholders to prioritise digital transformation in polytechnic education.

NAPS argued that support from TETFund would provide a sustainable platform for nationwide implementation, as many institutions lack the resources to fund large-scale digital classroom projects independently.

The association also described EDON as a homegrown Nigerian technology solution that deserves institutional and government backing.

“Supporting indigenous digital solutions means supporting Nigerian innovation, local developers and the nation’s digital economy,” Oghayan added.

NAPS further appealed to Bola Ahmed Tinubu to support the integration of AI-powered learning systems into national education intervention frameworks under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The association maintained that Nigeria’s technical and vocational education sector cannot continue to depend on outdated learning methods in an increasingly technology-driven world.
