The Rivers State Government has restated its commitment to strengthening tobacco control measures in the state, alongside sustained public education initiatives aimed at reducing tobacco use and exposure to harmful products.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Vincent Wachuku, disclosed this in Port Harcourt while briefing journalists on activities marking the World No Tobacco Day 2026.

He said the state government remains committed to working with stakeholders to promote healthier environments and strengthen enforcement of tobacco control laws across the state.

“In Rivers State, we recognise that protecting public health requires strong laws, effective enforcement, sustained public awareness, and collective action,” he said.

Dr. Wachuku noted that the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, through the Ministry of Health, is intensifying efforts to strengthen tobacco control policies and protect citizens, particularly young people, from exposure to tobacco products and second-hand smoke.

He explained that ongoing interventions are aimed at ensuring that legal and policy frameworks in the state align with global best practices for public health protection.

“These efforts aim to ensure that our legal and policy frameworks reflect global best practices and provide stronger safeguards for the health and well-being of our people, particularly children and young people,” he said.

Wachuku said the 2026 World No Tobacco Day theme, “Unmasking the Appeal – Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” highlights tactics used by the tobacco industry to attract young users through flavoured products, marketing strategies, and modern packaging.

He warned that such tactics are designed to mask the health risks associated with tobacco use and encourage addiction among first-time users, especially adolescents and young adults.

“Tobacco use remains one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide and a major contributor to heart disease, stroke, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases,” he said.

He also expressed concern over the growing popularity of emerging nicotine products, noting that many are marketed as fashionable and less harmful while still posing significant health risks.

According to him, tobacco consumption continues to impose heavy social and economic burdens on families, communities, and healthcare systems, reinforcing the need for stronger regulatory action and public awareness campaigns.
