Chelsea Weigh Rashford Move After Barcelona End Permanent Transfer Plans

Chelsea are reportedly considering a move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford after Barcelona decided against signing him on a permanent basis.

Rashford spent last season on loan at FC Barcelona and enjoyed a productive spell in Spain, scoring 14 goals in all competitions as the Catalan giants won La Liga and the Spanish Super Cup under manager Hansi Flick.

The England international had hoped to remain at the Nou Camp permanently, with Barcelona holding an option to buy him for around £26 million following the loan agreement with Manchester United.

However, Barcelona’s summer recruitment plans changed after they completed a £70 million deal for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United.

Despite previous praise from Flick and sporting director Deco, Barcelona have opted not to activate Rashford’s purchase clause, resulting in his return to Old Trafford.

The 28-year-old has made more than 400 appearances for Manchester United but is believed to face an uncertain future under newly appointed head coach Michael Carrick.

Reports suggest Rashford’s representatives are now assessing alternative destinations, with Chelsea among the clubs monitoring the situation.

According to Chelsea insider Si Phillips, the Blues have not ruled out a move but would only consider approaching Rashford later in the transfer window should other targets fail to materialise. Any potential deal is expected to be a loan rather than a permanent transfer.

Incoming Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso is expected to oversee further squad additions before the close of the transfer window.

Meanwhile, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham Hotspur have also been linked with the England forward as speculation over his future continues.
