The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has assured party members and supporters in Ekiti State of its support, alongside that of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for Dr. Wole Oluyede ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in the state.
The party stated that Oluyede had been adopted as its governorship candidate for the June 20 election and that efforts were ongoing to ensure victory at the polls.
The National Woman Leader of the party, Professor Adenike Ogunse, disclosed this at the grand finale of the Ekiti PDP gubernatorial mega rally held in Ado-Ekiti at the weekend.
According to her, Wike had planned to lead the national leadership of the party to the rally but was unable to attend due to circumstances beyond his control.
She explained that the decision to back Oluyede followed consultations between the candidate and the party leadership, adding that the PDP leadership and Wike were committed to supporting his emergence as governor.
Ogunse maintained that Oluyede remains the recognised candidate of the party as reflected on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal and expressed confidence in his chances at the election.
Addressing party leaders and supporters, Oluyede promised to prioritise road infrastructure, healthcare delivery and wealth creation through entrepreneurship and agriculture.
He pledged to commence rehabilitation of township roads within his first 100 days in office if elected.
Speaking on healthcare, Oluyede said the state has qualified medical personnel but faces challenges of inadequate equipment and poor service coverage.
He said his administration would invest in the health sector to improve access and strengthen service delivery.
On economic development, the PDP candidate argued that wealth creation in the state had remained low over the last three decades due to overdependence on civil service employment.
He said his administration would promote entrepreneurship and expand agricultural investment by encouraging mechanised commercial farming to create jobs and improve livelihoods.
Oluyede also urged residents to participate peacefully in the election and defend their votes.
The Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, described Oluyede as a competent and capable candidate.
She said her experience as a member of the PDP screening committee gave her confidence in his leadership capacity and expressed optimism that his administration would prioritise health, education and agriculture.
Akpoti-Uduaghan added that her visit was also aimed at mobilising support among women, youths and members of the Ebira community resident in Ekiti, noting their contributions to the state’s agricultural sector.
She urged voters to elect leaders they could trust with their future and that of their children.
Also speaking, the PDP deputy governorship candidate, Hon. Deji Ogunsakin, and a party leader in the state, Hon. Lanre Omolase, advocated for a power shift to Ekiti South Senatorial District.
They argued that since the creation of Ekiti State in 1996, no governor had emerged from the zone despite its population strength.
According to them, the Central and North Senatorial Districts had produced governors over the years, making it appropriate for the South to take its turn.
Other party leaders at the event included Campaign Director-General, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe; Senator Duro Fasuyi; Hon. Segun Adekola; Rt. Hon. Tunji Odeyemi; Rt. Hon. Kola Oluwawole; Hon. Lanre Omolase; and former PDP governorship candidate in the 2022 election, Hon. Bisi Kolawole, alongside women groups, youth organisations and supporters from across the 16 local government areas of the state.
