The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yobe State University (YSU) branch, has lashed at the Yobe State Government for its refusal to honour agreements with the union signed in July 2025, saying it could lead to an  industrial action if the situation persists.

Addressing journalists, the ASUU chairman of Yobe State University, Comrade Muhammad Adamu, said the union held meetings on April 23, May and June 17, 2026, and deliberated on unresolved welfare issues affecting academic staff in the institution.

Comrade Adamu said it could be recalled that the union embarked on an industrial strike in July 2025 over failure to implement the MoU and payment of arrears, which is affecting academic staff in the institution.

“Although some aspects of the agreement have been implemented, several critical provisions remain outstanding. Among the unresolved issues are non-payment of promotion arrears accumulated assurance to settle them,” he noted.

The chairman said the demand was formally presented to the government during a meeting convened by the acting secretary to the state government, Dr Mohammed Goje, on May 15, 2026, and there was no response received.

He complained about the non-payment of the new salary package approved under the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, that include the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, professors’ allowances, and the mainstreaming of an 11% annual salary component as earned academic allowance.

Comrade Adamu said many lecturers, readers and professors trained through government-sponsored staff development programmes were leaving for other universities and organisations offering better remuneration and welfare packages.

YSU ASUU, therefore, reaffirmed its commitment to dialogue, peaceful dispute resolution and development of the state University.

“Salaries and allowances of academic staff in Yobe State University are uncompetitive when compared with those of their counterparts in many public universities,” he stated.
