Bosnia Beat Qatar, Face Anxious Wait For World Cup Knockout Qualification

Bosnia and Herzegovina kept their FIFA World Cup hopes alive with a convincing 3-1 victory over Qatar in their final Group B match, but their fate now rests on results elsewhere after finishing third in the standings.

Needing a positive result to boost their chances of progression, Bosnia delivered an impressive display and secured all three points. However, victories for Switzerland and Canada in the group meant the Europeans could only finish behind the top two automatic qualifiers.

Bosnia made a bright start and took the lead in the 29th minute through Kerim Alajbegovic, who finished clinically after being set up by Ivan Bašić.

Their advantage doubled just five minutes later when Qatar defender Mohammed Ibrahim Abunada inadvertently turned the ball into his own net, giving Bosnia a commanding 2-0 cushion.

Qatar responded before the interval to keep the contest alive. H. A. Haydos reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute after an assist from Edmilson Junior, ensuring the Gulf nation went into the break with renewed hope despite trailing 2-1.

The second half proved a more evenly contested affair, with Qatar pushing for an equaliser and Bosnia looking to strike on the counter-attack.

Qatar’s task became more difficult in the 78th minute when A. F. Abdoulla was shown a red card, leaving his side to finish the match with ten men.

Bosnia quickly capitalised on the numerical advantage. Just two minutes later, Enver Mahmic restored the two-goal lead, before adding another in the 82nd minute to seal a deserved 3-1 victory and complete an outstanding individual performance.

The result ensured Bosnia ended their group campaign on a high, but it was not enough to secure automatic progression. Switzerland topped Group B after defeating Canada, while the co-hosts advanced as runners-up.

Bosnia must now endure an anxious wait to discover whether their points tally and goal difference will be sufficient to earn one of the places available to the best third-placed teams in the expanded tournament format.

For Qatar, the defeat brought an end to a disappointing campaign, with the Asian side unable to build on their first two group matches and ultimately finishing at the foot of the standings.

Bosnia, meanwhile, can take confidence from a strong performance and will hope it proves enough to extend their World Cup journey beyond the group stage.
