The Ondo State Police Command has arrested 15 motorists for allegedly operating vehicles with unregistered and covered number plates as part of a statewide enforcement of the directive of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu.

‎The Command said the enforcement exercise, which commenced across the state, formed part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, improve security monitoring and discourage the use of vehicles without proper registration, which are often exploited by criminal elements to evade identification.

‎In a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command said the operation was carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu.

‎According to the statement, 15 vehicles operating without registration number plates or with covered number plates were intercepted during the exercise. It added that the vehicles had been handed over to the State Traffic Department, while the affected motorists had been arraigned before a competent court.

‎Speaking on the operation, CP Ohagwu said the enforcement of the IGP’s directive would be continuous, stressing that the exercise was not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but to strengthen the state’s security architecture.

‎”The enforcement of the Inspector-General’s directive will be continuous and is not intended to inconvenience law-abiding citizens but rather to strengthen security architecture and improve the capacity of law enforcement agencies to effectively identify vehicles and their owners when investigating crimes,” he said.

‎The commissioner noted that vehicles with covered or no registration number plates pose significant security challenges and could be used to facilitate criminal activities, making strict enforcement necessary.

He urged vehicle owners and other road users to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and fitted with valid registration number plates at all times, while calling on members of the public to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with law enforcement officers.
