Enugu State governor, Dr Peter Mbah, has expressed his administration’s interest in investing in the Golf Section.

The governor stated this at the just-concluded 2026 Pro-Am Golf Tournament to mark his 3rd anniversary in office.

He applauded the Barr. Ifeanyi Nweke-led Enugu Sports Club in organising the tournament.

The week-long exercise, christened “Swing for Governor Peter Mbah pro-Am Golf Tournament” took place at the Enugu Golf Course and attracted over 150 golfers from across Nigeria, including 35 professionals.

Represented by his deputy, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, the governor, who is also president of the organisation, said the state government would explore areas it may likely invest in the golf section of the club.

He said the state government would look into some challenges facing it, including land encroachment into the Golf Course by individuals and institutions, as raised by the executive chairman, with a view to addressing them.

Earlier, Nweke had  in his speech appreciated the support the state government under Governor Mbah’s watch has been extending to the organisation as its president, adding that “you have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the revitalisation and  modernisation of this historic institution”

“We particularly appreciate the ongoing asphalt paving of the CluClub’s working areas, which has significantly enhanced both the aesthetics and functionality of our facilities. We hope it will cover the remaining areas at the main club and Golf section”. He stated.

The Chairman added: “We are equally grateful for the installation of Solar power infrastructure and the various rehabilitation and remedial works currently underway within the CluClub. These interventions are visible evidence of your commitment to infrastructural renewal, sustainability, and excellence”, Nweke stated.

Nweke also appealed to the governor to provide the club with an operational bus to enhance its mobility, especially during official engagements such as tournaments, and to provide monthly financial support/subvention to help the club maintain and manage its facilities.

“Upon assuming office as the Executive Chairman, I initiated the surveying of the Golf Course due to the increasing incidents of encroachment and urgent need to safeguard the club’s land assets”

“This exercise has become imperative for protecting the Golf Course from trespass and unauthorised developments by private individuals, some public institutions, and influential persons in society.

“We therefore, respectfully seek Your Excellency’s approval and support for the survey plan and the preservation of the Club’s land boundaries”, he stated.

The Club requested the governor’s approval to make the tournament an annual event, to continue throughout his tenure and beyond as a lasting platform for sports development, tourism promotion, and stakeholders’ engagement in the state.

Speaking with Sports writers at the event, the Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu, described the tournament as huge, saying it aligns with the state’s commitment to promoting sports tourism.

According to him, the tournament came at the right time, especially during this buildup to the upcoming National Sports Festival (NSF) to be hosted by Enugu State.

The Commissioner added that golf remains a beautiful sport that younger people should embrace, and that it would be among the games contested at the NSF.

Highlight of the tournament organised through a 23 – man local organising committee LOC,  made up of a former ranking member of the Enugu state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Paul Nnajiofor, and Ace Broadcaster, Hon. Vin Martin Ilo, were present at the presentation of trophies and other prizes to winners in various categories.
