Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has described sport as a vital part of human culture that unites people, promotes healthy living and strengthens communities.

The governor made the remarks while addressing athletes and participants at the 2026 Olympic Day Run, which he flagged off at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Saturday.

Represented at the event, Governor Okpebholo commended the Edo State Sports Commission, led by its Executive Chairman, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, for joining the global celebration of Olympic Day and honouring the legacy of the Olympic movement’s founders.

“Olympic Day is a celebration of something simple but powerful – the joy of moving together. Sport moves us, not just our bodies, but our confidence, our mindset and the way we connect,” he said.

“When we move, we feel better. It keeps our minds and bodies strong and healthy. And when we move together, we lift each other. Sport is for everyone – whether you are a mother, a daughter, a teammate, an Olympic champion or just starting out, we all begin in the same place.”

The governor acknowledged that taking the first step is often the hardest, noting that self-doubt can prevent people from embracing an active lifestyle.

“Every time you choose to move, you build confidence. You begin to believe in yourself and realise you are not alone. That is what sport truly gives us – not only better health but also a sense of community.”

He added that sport fosters a sense of belonging and that Olympic Day demonstrates how communities around the world come together through physical activity.

“So join in the celebration and be part of it – not just on Olympic Day, but every day. Let us move together and help each other take that first step. This Olympic Day, let us take that first step together. You can do this. Let’s move!” he said.

Held under this year’s global theme, “Let’s Move”, the event attracted government officials, athletes, coaches, sports administrators and fitness enthusiasts to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Speaking at the event, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, thanked the state government, particularly Governor Okpebholo and the Chief of Staff, Musa Yakubu, for their support.

He also praised the athletes, officials and members of staff for contributing to the success of the event.
