Celebrity fashion designer Veekee James has shared the heartbreaking story of her childhood, revealing that she lost her father before the age of five and was forced to start hustling from an early age.
Speaking during an interview, the entrepreneur said her father died while her mother was still pregnant with her youngest sibling, leaving the family to depend on the support of relatives.
According to Veekee, her late father’s brothers stepped in to help the family through difficult times, particularly by supporting their education. However, the experience taught her to become independent at a very young age.
“Growing up, I had to hustle a lot. My dad died before I was five. In fact, my mum was still pregnant with our lastborn when my dad died,” she said.
She added that she explored several small businesses while still in primary school to survive.
“I have been like a hustler since primary school. E no get wetin I dey tell you I no do. I’m not sure say e get any handwork for this world… well, some sha, like all those carpenter works and the rest. In fact, I even follow do that one because there was a time I used to make kolo for saving money.”
Veekee said the hardships she experienced growing up helped shape the resilient entrepreneur she is today.
