Nigeria Moves To Tax Crypto Transactions As Digital Asset Economy Comes Under New Scrutiny

Nigeria is tightening its grip on the fast-growing cryptocurrency market, with new tax rules and proposals that could see the government take a direct cut from digital asset transactions — potentially even in crypto itself.

The Nigeria Revenue Service has released fresh guidelines for taxing virtual assets, signalling a more structured approach to an industry that has largely operated in a regulatory grey zone. Reports indicate that authorities are considering a 1.5% stamp duty on certain crypto transactions, with collection possibly made in the underlying digital asset rather than naira.

The move comes as Nigeria remains one of the world’s most active crypto markets, driven by young investors, cross-border traders, and users seeking alternatives to traditional banking systems. For many, digital currencies have become both an investment tool and a hedge against inflation and currency volatility.

But the government’s latest steps suggest a shift from cautious observation to active participation in the sector’s value chain — particularly in revenue collection.

While officials argue that clearer taxation will improve transparency and boost public revenue, industry players are expected to raise concerns about compliance burdens and the practicality of taxing decentralised assets.

As Nigeria deepens its engagement with digital finance, the question is no longer whether crypto will be regulated — but how far that regulation will go, and who ultimately benefits from it.
