Ikogosi Road Race Returns October 31 As Ekiti Targets Youth, Tourism Boom

The 2026 Ikogosi Marathon will hold on Saturday, October 31, with organisers targeting about 8,000 runners from Nigeria and beyond for the 17.5km road race.

The event, organised by the Ikogosi Marathon Initiative in collaboration with the Ekiti State Government, is expected to further promote youth development, grassroots athletics, sports tourism and economic activity across the state.

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has reaffirmed his administration’s support for the marathon, describing initiatives of its nature as important platforms for empowering young people, developing grassroots sports and creating opportunities for businesses.

The 2026 edition is expected to build on the success of last year’s race, which attracted approximately 5,000 runners from Nigeria and other countries and helped strengthen the marathon’s reputation as an emerging road-running and sports-tourism event.

A total of ₦30 million in prize money will be shared among leading elite athletes and eligible Ekiti indigenes, providing an incentive for high-level competition while creating opportunities to identify and reward home-grown talent.

Organisers said preparations are focused on delivering a bigger and better event, with particular attention to athlete welfare, safety, organisation and the overall race experience.

The 17.5km route from Ilawe-Ekiti to the renowned Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort is expected to provide participants with a scenic sporting experience while showcasing Ekiti’s natural attractions, culture and infrastructure.

Beyond athletics, the marathon is projected to generate significant economic benefits for host communities. Hotels, restaurants, transport operators, traders, artisans and other small and medium-sized businesses are expected to benefit from the arrival of athletes, officials, spectators and visitors.

Young people are also expected to find opportunities in event management, hospitality, logistics, media, security and other sports-related services linked to the organisation of the race.

The event will further provide a platform for grassroots talent discovery, particularly among young athletes from Ekiti State. The dedicated opportunities for Ekiti indigenes within the ₦30 million prize purse are expected to provide additional motivation for local runners to compete at a higher level.

With participation projected to rise from about 5,000 runners in 2025 to 8,000 this year, organisers believe the marathon can further establish Ekiti as a destination for major sporting and tourism events.
