NHRC Demands Justice, Full Probe Into Killing Of Kano Commentator

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has demanded a prompt and comprehensive investigation into the killing of a Kano-based public commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Danshagamu, urging security agencies to uncover the perpetrators, motive and possible sponsors of the attack.

The NHRC Executive Secretary, Chief Tony Ojukwu, SAN, made the demand while condemning the fatal stabbing of Danshagamu, who was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants at his residence in Gaida Quarters, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

According to the Commission, the incident occurred on Monday, September 8, 2026, when the assailants allegedly forced their way into the victim’s residence and attacked him.

Danshagamu was subsequently rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialists Hospital, Kano, where he was confirmed dead on arrival.

Ojukwu described the killing as a grave violation of the fundamental right to life guaranteed under Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The NHRC boss expressed particular concern over the possible implications of the killing for freedom of expression and civic participation, noting that Danshagamu was known for expressing views on governance and public policy.

He stressed that citizens must be able to express their opinions, criticise public authorities and participate in public discourse without fear of violence, intimidation or reprisal.

While acknowledging the arrest of two suspects by the police, Ojukwu urged the Inspector-General of Police and the Kano State Police Command to treat the case as a matter of urgent national importance.

He demanded a prompt, thorough, impartial and transparent investigation capable of establishing not only the immediate perpetrators but also the motive behind the killing and identifying any sponsors, financiers, organisers or persons who aided or facilitated the attack.

The NHRC Executive Secretary further called for the swift prosecution of all suspects against whom credible evidence is established, warning that the investigation must not be allowed to stall or disappear within the criminal justice system.

He also urged the Federal Government, Kano State Government and security agencies to strengthen protective measures for journalists, bloggers, public commentators, human rights defenders and other citizens whose professional activities or public opinions could expose them to threats.

Ojukwu warned that violence must not become a means of responding to criticism, dissent or public commentary as Nigeria approaches a critical political and electoral period.

According to him, democratic participation can only flourish in an environment where citizens are protected and free to speak, question government policies and disagree without fear.

The NHRC Executive Secretary extended the Commission’s condolences to Danshagamu’s family, friends and associates, assuring them that the Commission would closely monitor the investigation and engage relevant authorities to ensure that justice is pursued to its logical conclusion.

Ojukwu declared: “In a democracy, dissent is not a crime. Criticism must be answered with dialogue and accountability, not violence.”

He insisted that condemnation of the killing alone was no longer sufficient, stressing that the perpetrators must be identified, the circumstances surrounding the killing established and justice served.
