The Charles Kene Ojukwu Initiative (CKOi) Okunenyeife Foundation has donated N5 million to Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, for the reconstruction of a walkway pavilion linking the old University Medical Centre with the newly constructed facility.
The donation comes ahead of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) accreditation exercise for the university’s medical programme.
The intervention was facilitated by the Special Adviser to the Vice-Chancellor on New Media, Mr Ekene Prosper Ezeumeanya, who had earlier introduced the UNIZIK alumnus, Canada-based medical doctor and philanthropist, Dr Charles Kenechukwu Ojukwu, to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie.
Presenting the donation at the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, the Manager of the CKOi Okunenyeife Foundation, Mr Sylvester Ojiugo, and a lecturer at the university, Dr Chibuike Abunike, represented Ojukwu, the founder of the foundation.
The foundation had, during Ojukwu’s visit to the university in June 2026, pledged support for the institution, particularly the development and upgrading of the University Medical Centre.
Abunike said the N5 million donation was part of several interventions Ojukwu planned to undertake in support of his alma mater.
He said the philanthropist remained interested in initiatives capable of contributing to the development of the university and improving its facilities.
Ojukwu, a British-trained Consultant Family Physician based in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, has expressed his intention to deploy his professional expertise and resources towards institutional development and healthcare infrastructure.
The CKOi Okunenyeife Foundation is involved in community health insurance, scholarships, youth empowerment and other development initiatives across Anambra State, in addition to supporting institutional projects.
Speaking during the presentation, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Hilda Osisioma, commended the foundation for fulfilling its pledge and supporting the development of the Medical Centre.
The Director of Medical Services, Dr Jane Ezeonu, also thanked the Vice-Chancellor for creating an environment conducive to partnerships and collaborations, while appreciating Ojukwu for his support.
Responding, the Vice-Chancellor expressed appreciation to the foundation and the donor, saying the university would continue to welcome alumni, development partners and other stakeholders willing to support its growth.
The reconstruction of the walkway pavilion is expected to improve movement between the old and new Medical Centre buildings and provide easier access for staff, students, patients and visitors.
The intervention adds to ongoing efforts by alumni and development partners to support infrastructure and institutional development at the university.
