The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has completed the construction of modern Divisional Police Headquarters and residential quarters in Ushafa and Saburi communities of Bwari and Abuja Municipal Area Councils respectively.

Director of Security Services Department, FCTA, Mr Adamu Gwary, disclosed this on Wednesday during an inspection of the projects, saying the two facilities were 100 per cent completed and ready for official handover.

Gwary said 10 other Divisional Police Headquarters being constructed across the six area councils had attained more than 90 per cent completion.

He said the projects were part of the FCTA’s plan to decentralise security infrastructure and address security gaps in satellite and rural communities.

According to him, the administration is constructing 12 Divisional Police Headquarters, two in each area council, to improve police presence and response to criminal activities across the territory.

“Out of the 10 ongoing projects, almost all have achieved more than 90 per cent completion, following the directive of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for all contractors to wrap up work before the end of November,” he said.

Gwary said the Ushafa and Saburi facilities were equipped with operational and residential facilities designed to support the deployment of police personnel to the communities.

He explained that the ground floor of the police headquarters has a central counter and detention facilities, including separate cells for male and female suspects, while the upper floor has eight furnished administrative offices, including an office for the Divisional Police Officer.

He added that the complex also includes a three-storey residential block containing six furnished two-bedroom en-suite flats for police personnel, with kitchens, dining areas, stores and sitting rooms.

Gwary said a technical team from the Public Building Department of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) would work with the contractor to verify the facilities against the Bill of Quantities before the final handover.

He recalled that during security challenges in the territory in 2023, Wike held town hall meetings across the six area councils and promised to decentralise security infrastructure from the city centre.

He said the Ushafa facility, alongside another police station at Igbu, about 35 kilometres away near the FCT-Nasarawa border, would strengthen security in satellite communities and help check cross-border criminal activities.

Gwary said the FCTA had recorded a reduction in reported cases of kidnapping and other serious crimes since 2023, attributing the development to improved equipment, expanded security infrastructure and measures against criminal collaborators.

He warned residents who provide information or other forms of support to kidnappers and criminal groups that they would face legal consequences.

“The minister did not mince his words in terms of issuing a stern warning to those informants that they will be treated like kidnappers,” he said.

The director urged residents to provide security agencies with timely and credible information on suspicious activities.

He disclosed that the FCTA had also increased its monthly logistics support to security agencies while expanding the use of technology for surveillance.

According to him, the Airport-to-Villa corridor is currently being monitored through technology managed from the Force Headquarters control room, while similar surveillance systems would be extended to other high-risk corridors.

“Aerial surveillance assets are being finalised for deployment to track criminal elements in rugged terrains,” he said.

The Site Engineer for the Ushafa project, Mr Kabir Muhammed, said the contractor worked with the project monitoring and evaluation teams to complete the facility within the stipulated schedule.
