The Sokoto State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents’ Chapel, has announced the death of a former LEADERSHIP Newspaper correspondent in Sokoto, Mr Olugbemi Adeniyi, at the age of 57.
Adeniyi, publisher of The Guild Newspaper, died in Abeokuta, Ogun State, after a brief illness.
His death has thrown the journalism community in Sokoto State into mourning, with colleagues remembering him as a committed professional whose dedication to journalism and active participation in union activities earned him the respect and admiration of fellow journalists.
In a condolence statement signed by the Secretary of the NUJ Correspondents’ Chapel, Sokoto State, Musa Ubandawaki, the Chapel chairman, Mr Ankeli Emmanuel, described Adeniyi’s death as a devastating loss to the union and the wider media community.
Emmanuel said the late journalist’s contributions to the Chapel would remain indelible in the memories of his colleagues, adding that he was not merely a member of the union but a valued colleague whose professional dedication, presence and sense of belonging strengthened the bonds of fellowship among journalists in the state.
The Chapel chairman extended his heartfelt condolences to Adeniyi’s immediate family, associates, professional colleagues and members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Sokoto State Chapter, where the deceased served as secretary until his death.
He urged the bereaved family, friends and colleagues to draw comfort from the positive memories of Adeniyi and the professional legacy he left behind.
The Chapel noted that his death was particularly painful to those who shared professional responsibilities and union activities with him, stressing that his passing had left a void that would be difficult to fill.
It added that the loss extended beyond the newsroom, leaving behind cherished relationships, shared experiences and memories that would remain with those who knew and worked with him.
The union prayed to Almighty God to grant Adeniyi eternal rest, forgive his shortcomings and give his family, friends and the entire journalism community the strength to bear the irreparable loss.
It also called on journalists to remain united in the face of grief and continue to uphold the professional values for which the late Adeniyi stood.
While mourning his death, the Chapel said his dedication and service would remain alive in the memories of his colleagues.
“May Almighty God grant his gentle soul eternal rest and comfort all those he left behind. Amen,” the statement added.
