Delta Air Lines has partnered with the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria (BRECAN) to intensify breast cancer awareness, promote early detection and encourage timely medical intervention among Nigerians.

The partnership, which was marked with activities in Lagos featured an awareness walk, breast cancer education and an engagement session with survivors as part of activities to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The initiative is aimed at educating communities on breast health, helping individuals recognise potential warning signs of the disease and highlighting the importance of seeking professional medical advice and undergoing regular screening.

Speaking on the partnership, Manager, Sales, West Africa, Delta Air Lines, Mary Gbobaniyi, said the airline’s commitment to connecting people extended beyond transportation to supporting communities where it operates.

She said breast cancer affected individuals, families and communities, adding that increased awareness and early detection were critical to improving treatment outcomes.

“Delta believes that connecting people extends beyond transportation; it involves supporting the communities where we operate. Breast cancer impacts individuals, families, and communities. Increased awareness and early detection are critical steps toward improving outcomes,” she said.

Gbobaniyi added that the collaboration with BRECAN would strengthen efforts to educate Nigerians, encourage prompt medical attention and provide support for people affected by the disease.

“Our partnership with BRECAN allows us to support efforts that educate individuals, encourage prompt medical attention, and assure those affected by breast cancer that they have support,” she added.

Also speaking, Founder of BRECAN and 29-year breast cancer survivor, Dr Betty Anyanwu Akeredolu, called for stronger healthcare systems, accessible screening and diagnostic services, affordable treatment and adequate financial and psychosocial support for patients and their families.

Akeredolu expressed concern over the increasing number of women who present at health facilities when breast cancer has reached an advanced stage, attributing the situation to delayed diagnosis, misinformation, financial constraints and inadequate access to treatment.

“Too many women still present at health facilities when their disease has reached an advanced stage. Too many families continue to experience avoidable suffering because of delayed diagnosis, misinformation, financial difficulties and inadequate access to treatment,” she said.

She urged Nigerians to sustain breast cancer advocacy beyond October, stressing that awareness and support for patients should remain a year-round commitment.

“As we conclude another Breast Cancer Awareness Month, let us remember that breast cancer does not recognise the boundaries of October. Our advocacy, compassion and commitment must therefore continue throughout the year,” she added.

The partnership aligns with Delta’s global commitment to breast cancer research, education and patient assistance.

Since 2005, the airline has partnered with the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) to fund research aimed at improving the understanding, prevention and treatment of breast cancer.

In October 2026, Delta announced that its partnership with BCRF had raised $36 million, supporting more than 720,000 hours of breast cancer research.

The airline also provides opportunities for its employees and customers to support the campaign through fundraising activities, customer donations, its SkyWish miles-donation programme and the iconic pink-and-white Breast Cancer One aircraft, which honours employees impacted by the disease.

Through its collaboration with BRECAN, Delta said it would continue to support efforts to address misconceptions about breast cancer, promote access to accurate information and encourage individuals to seek medical attention whenever they notice unusual changes.

Breast cancer remains a significant public health challenge, with early detection and timely medical assessment considered important factors in improving patient outcomes.
